Urban Core Values: With the Tellus, DC real estate developer Erkiletian builds on its founder's vision

    Green Building and Design Magazine-Nov/Dec 2014 November 11, 2014

Speaking about his companys environmentally conscious development philosophy back in 1972, Myron P. Erkiletian said, We developers are very anxious on a long term basis to work on ecology. Some 40 years later, his family business continues to manifest this environmental ethic and quest for sustainability with the Tellus, a 16-story, 254-unit apartment building in the heart of Arlington, Virginia.

Erkiletian began his construction career at age 24, working on the now-infamous Watergate complex. In 1968, he started his own construction and development company with only $2,000. To date, the eponymous company has developed, built, and now owns more than 8,000 residential units, two million square feet of office space, and nearly one million square feet of commercial space in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Its projects include mixed-use residential communities and the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Shakespeare Theatre Company to develop actors' campus at former Southeastern University

Washington Business Journal May 14, 2014

The District's own Shakespeare Theatre Companys next move will be its first move into Southwest D.C., with a planned actors' campus development at the former site of Southeastern University at 501 Eye St. SW.

The company is partnering with Alexandria-based Erkiletian Real Estate on a mixed-use development that will include residences for actors and apprentices, rehearsal and performance space, storage, classrooms and the company?s administrative headquarters. The partners purchased the property for an undisclosed price.

The development will allow STC to consolidate its operations. Currently, the company leases space at several locations in D.C. and Maryland. Performances will continue to be held at Sidney Harman Hall and The Lansburgh Theatre in Penn Quarter.

It is exciting to be able to support that growth with physical spaces for not just the productions themselves, but for the artists and staff that create the art, Artistic Director Michael Kahn said in a statement. This location is not only ideal for the company, but will allow us to aid in the revitalization of D.C.'s southwest quadrant.

The company plans to offer rehearsal studios and performance spaces at the new site at a reduced rate for Southwest community members, according to a press release. We've reached out to STC for more information and will update this post when we learn more.
